These days…you’ve got LOTS of buddies and close friends. The guy you got in trouble with in high school, the childhood friend you grew up with, your new best friend from work, and who can forget your college roommate who knows pretty much everything about you now. How do you decide on who’s the Best Man for your wedding day? Here’s some helpful advice.
1. Family first. Your college and high school buddies will understand if you choose your blood brother over them, trust me. However your brother may not grasp the concept that your best man is the guy you met 4 years ago drunk playing X-Box when he’s been a part of your life for all of your life. The only exception to this rule is MAYBE if your brother breaks out in hives when having to speak in public and is more than likely to faint at the head table before giving a speech.
2. Pick someone RESPONSIBLE. The Best Man is supposed to take care of you on your wedding day, not the other way around. He shouldn’t be someone who is always late and can’t be counted upon. He should stay sober until AFTER his Best Man toast at the bare minimum.
3. Tiebreaker. Go with the person who has the best speech writing and public speaking skills. After all, this is the person who will be standing up in front of your AND your new brides families and representing YOU. This is NOT the time to talk about the drunken female conquests you had in college, nor is it a time to shout and scream on a microphone. If you need to decide between a couple of gentlemen, use this as your tie-breaker. Good luck and choose wisely.
